Is your system ready for the daylight savings change in 2007?

Thanks to the Energy Policy act of 2005, the Federal Government has decided to change even time once again. Here are the settings for the new daylight savings time that begins in calendar year 2007:

Current (2006 and before) daylight savings:

Daylight savings starts at 2:00 A.M. on 04/02/06 (first Sunday in April) Daylight savings ends at 2:00 A.M. on 10/29/06 (last Sunday in October)

2007 Daylight savings:

Daylight savings starts at 2:00 A.M. on 03/11/07 (second Sunday in March) Daylight Savings ends at 2:00 A.M. on 11/04/07 (first Sunday in November)

Microsoft released an update for the change in Daylight Saving Time (DST) that goes into affect next spring in the United States due to the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The update also addresses some changes in other time zones. The update will be included on Microsoft Update, Automatic Update and WSUS starting December 12, 2006 for Windows 2003 and Windows XP. Windows Vista will already include the newer time zone data.

EarthLink Reported To Be Losing Customers’ Emails

Friday, December 8th, 2006

– following content is copied from SLASHDOT.org with a link below –

LandGator [CC] [MD] [GC] writes “Robert X. Cringely, doyen compu-columnist for PBS, reports on a hidden e-mail problem at Earthlink: They’re losing up to 9 messages out of 10 [CC] [MD] [GC], found as a result of a friend’s testing [CC] [MD] [GC].” From the article: “He sent messages from other accounts to his Earthlink address, to his aliased Blackberry address, and to his Gmail account. For every 10 messages sent, 1-2 arrived in his Earthlink mailbox, 1-2 (not necessarily the SAME 1-2) on his Blackberry, and all 10 arrived with Gmail. Swimming upstream through Earthlink customer support, my buddy finally found a technical contact who freely acknowledged the problem. Since June, he was told, Earthlink’s mail system has been so overloaded that some users have been missing up to 90 percent of their incoming e-mail. It isn’t bounced back to senders; it just disappears. And Earthlink hasn’t mentioned the problem to these affected customers unless they complain.”

9 out of every 10 email messages is Spam

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

The New York Times is reporting today that Spam is on the rise. Bill gates is quoted in 2003 that by 2006 the spam problem would be solved. It looked like he was going to be right, but spammers have come out full force in the last year.

NY Times article

We here at semo.net offer mail box protection and it is very effective. The product is called Postini and for only $10.00 a year you can protect your @semo.net email address. You can get it to protect your personal or business domain names as well. As the Times article states spammers are getting better at sneaking past filters because the old adage is true…”Build a better mouse trap and you get smarter mice”. We strive very hard to stay ahead of the game. That is why we offer value added services such as Postini. They work very hard to make sure their product is one step ahead of the Spammer. If you have any questions please give us a call.
