We want to remind users that Semo.net’s Support department will never email you asking for your username and password, or asking you to download a file to update settings. We’ve seen another incident of a scammer trying to steal users’ accounts by emailing them claiming to be Semo.net Support. If you receive such an email, do not reply to it or any address contained within, and do not click any links asking you to update or verify settings. Please simply delete the email.

We have blocked all email going to the address specified in the spam so if someone does send their information it should not make it to the sender. We have also contacted the originating ISP about the spam and they have identified the sender and turned off that account.

If you’re ever in doubt about if an email came from us, please do not hesitate to call our office.

There’s a new piece of malware (defined in Wikipedia as a portmanteau from the words malicious and software, is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner’s informed consent.) out there that poses as a friendly site, but in reality, it will attack your PC.

It creates an entry in the registry and prevents you from updating your antivirus programs. It also prevents you from making changes in the registry itself, and can even redirect you to more bad sites on the internet.

Semo.net’s repair team can fix this for you, and make sure your PC leaves protected and updated with the latest security fixes.

After internal discussion, we have decided to no longer offer Usenet “newsgroup” access with our Internet service. This only affects users who were accessing newsgroups using the “news.semo.net” address; not our semo.net weblog or the news headlines on our homepage. The small number of users who were making use of the service, as well as the general shift of most Internet users away from that network over the last decade, mean that it has been a losing proposition for us for several years now.

We know that some people are very fond of Usenet access, though. For those users, we want to recommend that they move to an individual newsgroup service from a provider like GigaNews, who run the servers that we have been providing access to for the past eight years. They offer service for as low as $2.99 per month, and can provide specialized plans depending on your individual downloading requirements. You can also find most Usenet discussion groups on the web at Google Groups for free.

Microsort has released a critical patch for all versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008 running the Server service. The vulnerability fixed by this patch could allow an attacker to remotely execute code on your Windows server. Semo.net and Microsoft strongly advise that everyone download and install this patch. The installation only takes a couple of minutes, and you will have to reboot the computer when complete.

If you or your company would like a certified computer technician to make this change, contact semo.net at 573.686.9114. The cost will be $20 plus $0.40 per mile from our Poplar Bluff office (if additional patches are necessary prior to installing this patch extra charges will apply).

As Monday evening approached, both coaches did all they could to trim the nerves of these 8- to 10-year-olds as they took the field for the semi-finals game against Lynch’s Lawn Service. After an entire season where double-digit leads were common and balls were hit to the fence nearly every inning, it was hard for fans, coaches and players to keep their wits in a low-scoring, defensive duel.

By the end of the game, it was clear that semo.net’s bats were not going to come alive and it was up to their defensive skills to keep them in the game. Going into the top of the sixth and last inning, semo.net took the field leading 2 – 1. Read the rest of this article…
