Today Australia’s Government announced its intent to create a private/public company to build a 100mb/s Ethernet service to 90% of the homes in the country. The new network, with the government owning at least a 51 percent stake, will bring a fiber-to-the-home network with Open Access rules similar to what Poplar Bluff’s City Cable did with Internet access in 2005. On the slate for topics this morning with Rick Carl & Company, we will be talking about:

Conficker Virus

The Conficker worm is a computer worm that can infect your computer and spread itself to other computers across a network automatically, without human interaction. If you have an updated version of an AntiVirus program, you should not be at risk.

How Do I know if I have Conficker
To quickly find out if your PC might be one of the millions infected by Conficker, try clicking to Microsoft.com, Symantec.com, and McAfee.com. If you can get to these sites, you’re cool. But if your browser will not let you access any of these websites, then you very likely are infected with Conficker.

How does it work?

semo.net Hydra Internet Service makes the Wall Street Journal

Making a splash yesterday in Newspapers coast to coast, semo.net was touted as developing a service using a product from Mushroom Networks. This new offering was developed and designed by the employees of semo.net in cooperation with the design team from Mushroom Networks.

This new service offering was picked up by Wall Street Journal and several quotes from me were highlighted on the WSJ web site.

Windows 7.0 – Preview

We’ve been testing Windows 7.0, Microsoft’s latest operating system, and it is exactly what PC owners have been waiting for. The final release of W7 isn’t due out til the fall or later, but our technicians installed the beta software on one of our test systems that had XP previously. All of the installed programs running on W7 run faster than on XP, and when compared to Vista it is an even more impressive increase.

semo.net is already gearing up for the release of Windows 7.0 because we are in the process of creating a Windows 7 Upgrade Center. We will take your computer, upgrade your ram and your operating system for one low price that will beat the competition in price and turnaround time. At this point, our testing of Windows 7.0 gives us the confidence to suggest an upgrade to EVERYONE running Vista and will be recommending it for most computers running XP if your processor and RAM qualify.

Today was the announcement date for the partnership between semo.net and Mushroom Networks. We’ve been locally selling the Hydra Internet service since January, but the two companies recently struck a deal to bring Broadband Business solutions to Southeast Missouri.

Touting that deal today are articles in Wall Street Journal and Telephony Magazine.

Imagine 1000 songs on an iPod smaller than a key. Plus, it talks to you! That’s right, who needs an LCD screen when you can press a button and have the song, playlist & artist information spoken to you. Very cool feature.

The iPod shuffle can be ordered online from Apple for $79. For more information, check out the Apple Shuffle page.

Time-Warner Hints to Over-The-Top Television service
Over-the-top TV has long-been the “cable network death-knell” because it provides TV programs over the Internet to your computer or television. In some ways Netflix provides this by allowing you to pick television shows to watch. All of CBS television programs are available on the Internet the day after they air, and who hasn’t heard of Hulu? But now that Time Warner has divested itself of any cable networks, it is hinting that its programming (CNN & TNT) will be available online.

These days, people store themselves on their hard drives: Photos, music library, financial & tax info, address book, etc. – essentially, it’s your digital life. And as valuable as your digital life is, more and more people are losing their digital life and digital memories. I cannot emphasize how painful it is to watch someone realize their last five years’ worth of family photos no longer exists.

This past week, Microsoft announced that David Porter will head up their Retail Chain. Porter has spent the past two years with Dreamworks and 25 years before that with WalMart.

Unfortunately, here in Southeast Missouri, Microsoft will probably not be on a corner near us any time soon (or ever for that matter). But just like Apple users who trek to St Louis every few months for an IV injection of all things Apple, I’m sure a Microsoft store in St Louis would drain a few local gas tanks.

Confession: Even though my wife’s iPod is our only apple product, I cannot walk past an Apple store. The Apple logo in a like a giant bug light—drawing the geek in my through its doors. I’ve enjoyed the Apple flagship stores in New York and Chicago as well as smaller ones located in malls.

Just like every other company, Microsoft constantly needs to shift, re-shape, and re-market itself for the next generation. [insert your favorite Vista joke here!] I certainly look forward to walking into a Microsoft store complete with the latest in home entertainment, home networking, computing, gaming and more.

One of the biggest problems with providing Internet access to business customers is:
ALL types of internet services fail at some time.
