A campaign encouraging people to enter a emergency contact number in their
mobile phone’s memory under the heading “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) is
spreading rapidly as a particular consequence of terrorist attacks [Hat
Tip: Deborah J. Martell]. But it’s a good idea for other reasons, too.
Originally established as a nation wide campaign in the UK, “ICE” allows
paramedics or police to be able to quickly contact a designated relative or
next of kin in an emergency situation. The idea is the brainchild of East
Anglian Ambulance Service Paramedic Bob Brotchie and was launched in May of
this year. Bob has been a paramedic for 13 years, and said:
“I was reflecting on some of the calls I’ve attended at the roadside
where I had to look through the mobile phone contacts struggling for
information on a shocked or injured person.”
Almost everyone carries a mobile phone now, and with ‘ICE’ we’d know
immediately who to contact and what number to ring. The person may
even know their medical history.”

By adopting the ICE advice, your mobile phone will help the rescue services
quickly contact a relative or friend – which could be vital in a life or
death situation. It only takes a few seconds to do, and could easily help
save your life. Simply select a new contact in your phone book, enter “ICE”
and enter the number of the person you wish to be contacted in case of an
emergency. For more than one contact name, use ICE1; ICE2, ICE3, etc.
If you have teens driving, spouses or parents that travel, loved ones with
medical conditions, urge them to program their cell phones with an ICE
number. Though it may never be used; it’s a common sense safety thing!

Microsoft has gone live with its blocking technology that will require people to validate their copies of Windows before being allowed download access to updates.

The novelly titled Genuine Advantage 1.0 program will check that anyone accessing Windows Update, Microsoft Update for Windows or the Microsoft Download Center has a genuine Windows operating system before allowing any downloads. Security updates will however be exempt from the ban. Read the article.

In the May 2003 issue of Discover, an article titled “Anything Into Oil” drew a phenomenal reader response. The process described—transforming turkey guts, old tires, used plastic bottles, and municipal sewage into fuel oil—struck some readers as more like alchemy than chemistry and struck others as the answer to energy shortages, not to mention the solution to some of America’s worst waste problems. PCs are great machines when they are on. Unfortunately, they are just about useless when they are off. This is about to change! In Windows “Longhorn,” monitors are not enough. In addition to conventional displays, Longhorn (the next version of Windows) supports “Auxiliary Displays,” or short, “Aux Displays.”

POPLAR BLUFF, Missouri (AP) — A new policy at a high school requiring students to wear identification badges has prompted some parents to complain and students to protest the move as an infringement on their rights.

The badges, which are identical to the IDs students have always been required to carry and use to check out library books at Poplar Bluff High School, are now required to be worn on campus during school hours.

“We need to be able to identify people without having to walk up to them and ask if they are a student or a teacher,” said Sheldon Tyler, an assistant principal at the high school in this town of 16,700 about 150 miles south of St. Louis.

Some students have put stickers on their badges in protest — a policy the superintendent has permitted as an exercise in free speech. One father, John Durbin, withdrew his two daughters until he can talk to the school board about the policy.

“I believe this country needs security. But if we put ourselves in a cage just to be safe, what kind of life do we have? There is a fine line there, and I wonder if we are beginning to cross it,” Durbin said.

Durbin said the policy change should have been decided by the school board instead of school administrators. He and other parents plan to give the school board a petition at the next meeting on November 18 asking them to eliminate the policy.

Bush, Cheney Left Off Mo. County Ballots

Thu Oct 7,10:01 PM ET

VAN BUREN, Mo. – Officials in one Missouri county are reprinting absentee ballots for the Nov. 2 general election after discovering that President Bush (news – web sites) and Vice President Dick Cheney (news – web sites) were left off.

The ballots were mailed beginning Sept. 21, and Carter County Clerk Becky Gibbs said several voters noticed the oversight.

“We are rectifying it,” she said. “There was no intent to leave them off.”

Fewer than 500 of the erroneous ballots were sent out, and some have already been returned.

Replacement ballots will be sent to everyone who requested an absentee ballot along with a letter explaining the error.

Terri Durdaller, spokeswoman for the Secretary of State, said that if absentee voters who previously returned a ballot send a new one, it will replace the previous one. If they don’t return a new ballot, their first one will be counted.

“The key is just to make sure everybody does get the changed ballot,” Durdaller said.

Ballots that other voters will use Nov. 2 have not been printed yet.

Gibbs said the cost to print replacement absentee ballots should be minimal.
